Aikido Overview

Aikido is a form of martial art that was created by Morihei Ueshiba in the 1920’s. However the origins of the sport can be traced back to the 12th Century.

Practitioners of the sport do so in an arena called a “dojo” and use circular movements to turn their attacker’s strength against them. These movements are most effective for throwing and joint immobilisation.

Traditionally a non-competitive sport, in recent times several styles have developed to incorporate a competitive element including Tomiki Aikido.

The IAF held its first Congress in 1976 in Tokyo, Japan. In 1984, the federation became a Full Member of the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) and the International World Games Association (IWGA).
