Swimming Overview
England is recognised as the birthplace of the sport of swimming with regular competitions taking place from 1847. Introduced for men at the first Olympics in 1896 with two open water events (100m and 1500m). There are now 16 events for both men and women. Disability Swimming is one of the biggest sports in the Paralympic program and has been included since the first Games in Rome in 1960.
Synchronised Swimming Overview
Synchronised Swimming was originally known as Water Ballet and was developed in Canada in the 1920s. Quickly spreading to America the sport sprung to fame due to series of MGM productions of “aqua ballet”. Introduced as a exhibition sport in 1948 becoming a full sport for women only (duet and team) in Los Angeles in 1984.
Diving Overview
Diving was developed in the 17th century from the sport of gymnastics where competitors would practice their tumbles over water. It was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1908 with platform diving appearing on the programme 4 years later. Most recently synchronized diving has been introduced (Sydney, 2000). There are now 8 events on the Olympic diving programme.
Water Polo Overview
Water Polo was developed in England in the 1870s with the first international match (England v Scotland) taking place in 1890. First appearing on the Olympic programme in 1900 there are now events for men and women.
