Athletics Overview

Athletics in the UK has been documented as far back as the 1800s where village sport were part of rural life. The first University meet was at Exeter College, Oxford in 1850. Lord’s Cricket ground built a two-man track in 1837 which hosted short, middle and long distance races. The first Amateur Athletics Championships were held in London in 1866 with the first international meet, taking place in Dublin in 1876.

In 1998, sweeping changes were made in the sport to maximise future success. UK Athletics strive to maintain a coordination and support role, be effective rather than political and build stronger links with clubs and their athletes.

Appearing at the Ancient Games, athletics has also featured at every modern Olympics. There are many events that cover both track and field with perhaps the 100m sprint and the marathon most celebrated.
