Basketball Overview
Basketball was invented by Dr James Naismith in 1891 with the first organised men's game taking place the following year and the first women's game the year after that.
An exhibition sport in 1904, Basketball first appeared as a full Olympic Sport in 1936. Today there are team tournaments for men and women.
