Baton Twirling Overview

Baton Twirling is a competitive sport involving the manipulation of a balanced metal rod. The rod is manipulated by the hands and the body of the athlete. It is similar in some ways to rhythmic gymnastics which used ribbons, balls, and hoops in a co-ordinated routine to music.

Baton Twirling became popular after the marching bands of America started to introduce drum majorette’s to add colour to the parade. As more and more people wanted to become drum majorette’s Baton Twirling was developed as a sport in its own right.

The history of Baton Twirling is not clear. It is thought that the Dutch settlers of Pennsylvania brought the art over. Other theories suggest that it originated at Millsaps College in Mississippi. Shortly after the American Civil War, the well-known Major Millsaps founded a college. His "lady athletes" were called the Majorettes and it is possible that this is the origin of our present-day high-stepping majorette's name.
