Biathlon Overview

As a survival tactic Northern Europeans hunted for food on skies using rifles to stop their prey. This developed into the sport of Biathlon and the first competition was held in 1767.

First appearing on the Olympic program as a demonstration sport in 1924, biathlon became a full Olympic sport at the 1960 games. Whilst all men’s and women’s competitions combine skiing and shooting biathletes compete in 4 distinct events, namely, Sprint, Pursuit, Individual, Relay and Mass Start. The distance for each race varies from 6km to 20km with athletes shooting 2 or 4 times depending on the race format.
