Bob Skeleton Overview

Bob Skeleton originated in the late 1880s in Switzerland and is considered to be the first sliding sport. The first race was held on the road from St. Moritz to Celerina in 1884 but it wasn't until 1887 that riders began to compete in the "head first" position used today. In 1892 a mostly metal sled was made which people thought looked like a skeleton and the sport had its name.

After achieving Olympic status in 1928 and 1948 Bob Skeleton then suffered a 54 year absence before its reintroduction to the Games in Salt Lake City in 2002. There are seperate events for men and women which are judged on the aggregate time from 2 runs of the track.
