Bobsleigh Overview

Bobsleigh was invented by some Englishmen on holiday in St Mortiz, Switzerland in 1890. Their intention was to design a sled that would carry up to 6 people to Celerina. The sport generated a following very quickly and by 1902 a track was created. At first 5 or 6 people (including one women) would race but by 1930 this was modified and 2 and 4 man events became the norm. With technological advancement bobsleighs have become extremely expensive pieces of equipment and with speeds in excess of 90mph bobslieghers are highly trained athletes.

Bobsleigh has been part of the Winter Olympic programme since the first Games in 1924. Men compete in the skeleton (one man), 2 man and 4 man bobsleigh events. Women compete in the skeleton and 2 woman bobsleigh events.
