Boccia Overview

A game similar to bowls and petanque, Boccia (pronounced "BOTCHA") is thought to have originated in Greece where competitors would throw large stones at a "target" stone. Introduced to the UK in the late 70s, the sport was intended only for those with severe cerebal palsy. However the game spread quickly and is now played by many sections of the community. The objective of the game is to propel your six coloured balls to a position closer to the "jack" than your opponent's balls.

It is a game for individuals, pairs and teams of three and all competitors must play from a seated position. The international calendar follows a four year cycle with a major event each year; namely the European/Zonal Championships, the World Championships, the World Cup and the Paralympic Games (achieving its status at the 1984 Games in New York).
