Canoe Polo Overview
Canoe polo is the fastest growing form of competitive canoeing both in the UK and worldwide. Its origins can be traced back to an 1875 illustration in ‘Punch’ magazine. Men and women played together on double-hulled boats using double-bladed paddles to hit a ball.
In the 1920’s and 30’s Germany and France both created their own versions of canoe polo; in Germany they called it ‘Kanupolo’. These two sports were both played outside on lakes or rivers. However the development of a small wooden kayak by Bert Keeble in 1966 meant that young children could learn the game in the safety of a swimming pool. A few years later Alan Byde of the British Canoe Union built a glass-reinforced plastic version of this boat which led to the game be played indoors.
The first national championships were held in 1971 and the modern game was created. In 1990 the International Canoe Federation favoured the English way of playing and created the international rules. The first world championships were held in 1994 in Sheffield and are now held bi-annually. In 2005 the sport was included in the World Games.
