Curling Overview

Curling dates back to 16th century Scotland. One stone has been found that dates back to 1511. At first the sport was played on frozen ponds and lochs. Handles were fastened to the stones in the1600s. The most recent developments have included the introduction of indoor arenas and a standardisation of the size of the stones (19.1kgs).

A demonstration sport at four successive Olympics, Curling first appeared on the full programme at the Nagano Games in 1998. There are events for both Men and Women. Wheelchair Curling first achieved Paralympics status at the Turin Games in 2006.
