Disability Athletics Overview

With more events and participants than any other sport, Disability Athletics became a Paralympics sport in Rome, 1960. Track events include all Olympic distances whereas Field events only include club throwing, discus, high jump, javelin, long jump, pentathlon, shot put and triple jump. The 60m wheelchair sprint was included in the Tokyo Games in 1964, with the 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m all introduced 12 years later in Toronto.

Events are open to all athletes in all disability classes but not all events are offered for all classes. The classification can be briefly broken down as follows, F or T 11-13 (visually impaired), F or T 31-38 (cerebral palsy), F or T 41-46 (amputee and les autres), T 51-54 (wheelchair track) and F 51-58 (wheelchair field).
