Disability Tennis Overview

The sport was a demonstration event at the Seoul Paralympic Games in 1988 becoming a full sport four years later in Barcelona. In Athens, 2004, a Quad division was introduced for athletes affect in three or more limbs. The Wheelchair Tennis tour began in 1992 and the sport is considered the fastest growing of all paralympic events. The tour includes, Men's Singles and Doubles, Women's Doubles and Quad Singles and Doubles with the Paralympic Games adding Women's singles.


Disability Tennis can only be played by athletes with a permanent mobility related physical disability (resulting in substantial loss of function in one or both lower limbs). The Quad division only allows participants with a permanent physical disability in three or more limbs.
