Duathlon Overview

Duathlon is a sport which involves racers starting with a run, moving on to a bike and then finishing with another run. There are a number of common distances:

- 2-mile run/ 10-mile bike/ 2-mile run

- 5k run / 30k bike/ 5k run

- 10k run / 40k bike / 5k run (International or short course)

- 10k run/ 60k bike / 10k run (Powerman or long course)


The world's leading Duathlon event is Powerman Zofingen (Switzerland). It's a hilly 10km run, mostly on trails, followed by a very hilly 150km road bike consisting of 3 50km loops and finally a very hilly 30km 2 loop trail. The growing popularity of extreme sports has encouraged a new form of Duathlon to become popular in the last few years. Referred to as an Off-road Duathlon, or "Dirty-Du", it consists of an off-road or trail run, followed by a mountain bike leg followed by a final off-road or trail run.


The ITU run a series of Duathlon events which results in an international ranking list. They have also help annual World Championships since 2003.
