Eskrima Overview

Eskrima is a martial art which is also known as Arnis de Mano and Kali. Its origins are unclear with some historians suggesting that it is a combination of the various forms of fighting found in the Philippines. However others suggest that it is a variation of Indian martial arts brought to the Philippines by travellers of the Malay Archipelago. What it clear is that Eskrima was heavily influenced by the Spanish, whose conquistadors invaded the Philippines in the early 1500s.

28” long rattan sticks are used in the modern sport and much like Fencing and Kendo, protective gear is essential. The target area is anywhere above the knee both for the Single and Double stick formats of the sport. The 10 point “Must System”, akin to Boxing, is used to score each of the 3 one minute rounds. A knockout approach is used in competition Eskrima with scoring based on power, repetition and effectiveness of hit combined with ring control and defense.

With World Championships being held every two years (alternately hosted in the Philippines and another country) and region championships held in the years in between, Eskrima is one of the fastest growing of the “new” martial arts.
