Goalball Overview

Goalball was invented in 1946 as a therapy to rehabilitate blinded World War II veterans. It has developed into a sport exclusively for athletes with blindness/visual impairment. Teams of three must roll the ball into their opponent's goal whilst attempting to prevent the opposition from scoring in their goal. Bells inside the ball help to orient the players. For this reason whilst the ball is in play the venue must fall silent.

Goalball is played by male and female teams. Goalball first appeared on the Paralympic program in Toronto in 1976 with the first Goalball World Championships taking place two year later in 1978. The sport is now played in at least 51 countries.
