Ice Hockey Overview
It is widely accepted that Ice Hockey developed from a game played by a group of English Crimean War veterans in 1860 at Kingston Harbour, Canada. By 1880 the first team was formed and the game spread to Ottawa by 1885. The sport later took hold in the USA with the advent of refrigerated rinks. Today teams of 6 play three 20 minute periods.
Ice Hockey was included in the summer Games of 1920 in Antwerp. It has been on the winter Olympic programme since the first games in 1924.
