Karate Overview

Karate can be traced back to the Shoalin Monks who practiced Zen Buddhism in the 5th century BC. A series of complex movements was practiced in order to strengthen both body and mind. The two character word Karate means Empty Hands. Today there are four main styles of karate in Japan, namely, Goju-ryu, Shito-ryu, Shotokan, and Wado-ryu.

As well as many annual regional events the FMK organises Junior and Senior World Championships every other year and Karate is also on the World Games programme.
