Kickboxing Overview

Kickboxing first came about in the 1950’s when a Japanese boxing promoter called Osamu Nughifor decided to combine the martial arts of Muay Thai and Karate. The term of ‘Kickboxing ‘ has been disputed since , but it Is accepted generally that only the American an Japanese styles are included in the sport.

The sport is a combination of martial art styled kicks with boxing styled punches. Opponents are split into catagories of a similar standard and compete wearing protective gear including, a mouth-guard, hand-wraps, 10oz boxing gloves, groin-guard, shin-pads, kick-boots, and optional protective helmet (usually for those under 18.)

Competitive kickboxing started in the 1970’s over in America. The sport soon spread through Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. The 1990’s saw the most recent surge in the popularity of the sport however there are still major divisions in the sport (much like boxing). As a result there are various "world championships" run by different governing bodies.
