Korfball Overview

Nico Broekhuysen invented the game of Korfball in the Netherlands in 1901. Designed as a game to be played by mixed teams, it is comparable to both basketball and netball. The idea being that school children could compete equally regardless of sex. Holland formed a national federation by 1902 and the sport spread around the world.

The sport’s international federation was formed in 1923 and became the International Korfball Federation in 1978. The IKF is recognised by the International Olympic Committee. Korfball is one of the more popular sports at the World Games.
