Luge is the French word for sled. Their existence dates back to the Vikings in 800AD. The first organised international meet of the sport we know today was in Switzerland in 1883. 21 competitors from Austria, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA took part in a race over 4km.

Luge made its Olympic debut in 1964 and includes 3 events; Men’s singles, Women’s singles and Mixed Doubles.
