Marathon des Sables Overview
The Marathon des Sables, which in English is Marathon of the Sands, started back in 1986 and is a 6 day, 156mile race, in which the athletes must be completely self-sufficient. The only items that the athletes do not have to supply on route is water and tents. However all belongings and food must be carried in their backpacks throughout the race.
Some of the items included are; Food, Sleeping bag, Torch, Compass, Knife, Anti venom pump and Survival kit
In total the athletes are required to eat and present that they have eaten up to 14,000 calories, with a minimum of 2000 calories on any day. This is one of the many health and medical rules that are enforced by the organisers. At the start of each stage the competitors are given depending on the length of stage 1.5 litres of water at between 5 and 10 checkpoints. When they reach the end of the stage a further 4.5 litres of water is issued to ensure that they re-hydrate.
The prize for winning the general ranking, which is the first individual past the finish, is 5000 Euros and a trophy. This has been won only by 7 different competitors with the last 13 years dominated by a pair of brothers Lahcen Ahansel and Mohamad Ahansal who have won it 10 and 3 times each respectively.
