Motor Sport Overview

Motor sport began shortly after the construction of the first successful petrol fuelled cars. The first contest, organised by French magazine Le Petit Journal, took place in 1894 and determined reliability and performance. The first race followed a year later with the winner Émile Levassor disqualified because his car was not a four seater. The first international event (The Gordon Bennett Cup) took place sometime at the beginning of the 1900s and the predecessor of the now famous Le Mans 24 hour race was first held in 1905.

Today motor racing comes in a multitude of shapes and sizes. These include single-seater, rally, ice, touring car, stock car, drag, sports car, off-road, hill-climbing, kart, legend car, autocross, autograss, board track, demolition derby, dirt speedway, dirt track, drifting, folkrace, GP Truck, rallycross, road, short track, slalom, solo, sprint car and street racing. Most of these types of racing are controlled by officials who use up to 11 different coloured flags to pass information on to the drivers.
