Cycling - Paralympic

Visually impaired athletes were the first to compete in cycling events in the early 80s. However athletes with cerebral palsy and amputees started racing at the 1984 International Games for the Disabled. Until 1992 the three disability groups competed separately but at the Barcelona Games athletes from all three groups competed intensely.

Athletes compete individually and in teams of three. Standard racing bikes and tricycles are used by athletes with cerebral palsy; visually impaired athletes take part with a sighted partner on a tandem bike; and they participate in time trails and road races. Amputees and athletes with permanent locomotor deficiencies take part in individual road races on specially adapted bicycles. The Athens Paralympic Games saw the introduction of handcycling for athletes who normally require a wheelchair or those unable to use a standard bike or tricycles because of sever lower limb disability.
