Paralympic Dressage Overview

A Paralympic event since Atlanta, 1996, Dressage is the only paralympic equestrian event where participants compete in individual and team events. Athletes who are unable to give signals with their legs develop other ways of communicating with their horse (e.g. using the dressage whip or other aids. Riders must compete individually and follow a set pattern including changes of speed and direction.

Paralympic Dressage is open to all disability groups. Riders are grouped according to their functional profiles at the Games and scoring is based on the way they control and manoeuvre the horses. Where previously, borrowed horses had been used, the Athens Games, 2004, saw riders using their own horses.
