Modern Pentathlon Overview
Pentathlon dates back to the Ancient Games 2700 years ago where it was described as the sport with the most perfect athletes. In 19th century France a cavalry officer delivering a message on horseback, rode through enemy lines and was challenged to a duel. Having won the duel another enemy soldier shot his horse and the cavalry man killed his adversary with a single shot. The officer ran on and then was forced to swim across a river to deliver his message successfully and the sport of Modern Pentathlon was born (so legend has it).
Introduced to the Olympic Games in 1912 and based on the French cavalry man’s story, Modern Pentathlon is the only sport which was created solely for the Olympics.
