Powerlifting Overview

Powerlifting is a test of upper body strength that consists of one discipline, the bench press. Participants must lower the bar and hold it in a motionless position on their chest and then bench press it upwards to arms length, locking their elbows. Originally "Weightlifting" for athletes with a disability Powerlifting was only open to men with spinal injuries. The sport today is a lot more open and is split into 10 different categories based on body weight.


Powerlifting (Weightlifting - as it was called) first achieved Paralympic status at the second Games in Tokyo in 1964 with women first competing at the Sydney Games in 2000. Participants from 109 countries now take part in the sport.
