Rowing Overview

Rowing is one of the most ancient and traditional of sports. Almost all ancient civilisations used rowing to advance society both during war and in peace times. Competitive rowing dates back to military based races in ancient Egypt and Rome. Ordinary citizens began to get involved in the sport in the 1700s.

Introduced as an Olympic sport at the first modern Games in Athens in 1896, rowing has produced one of the greatest athletes of all time; the British five-times Olympic gold medallist, Sir Steve Redgrave. Adaptive rowing will appear on the Paralympic program for the first time in 2008 at the Beijing Games.
