Sailing Overview

Initially sail boats were used for transport and fishing across the globe. Prior to World War II the boats were enormous but over the years have developed and become smaller and more nimble (e.g. windsurfers).

Olympic Yachting was scheduled for the first modern Games in 1896 but had to be cancelled due to poor weather conditions. The sport has been a permanent fixture since the 1900 Games and now includes 11 different classes. Great Britain has had considerable success in recent times. Introduced as a demonstration sport at the Atlanta Paralympic Games in 1996, Sailing has been a full Paralympic sport since the Sydney Games in 2000.
