Shooting Overview

Shooting can be traced back to the 11th century in some European countries and became more widespread through the Middle Ages. Shooting as a sport did not begin until the 19th century when many of the current federations were formed.

At the first Olympics (1896) shooting had the highest number of participants competing over nine different events. Today there are 17 events (7 for women and 10 for men) in 4 categories; shotgun, rifle, pistol and running-target. Shooting became a Paralympic sport at the Amhem Games in 1980.
