Snowboarding Overview

Snowboarding was developed in the USA in the 1960s and appealed to those who surfed and skateboarded. By 1980 snowboarding was a national pastime and 1983 saw the first World Championships which are now held bi-annually. Snowboarding became and Olympic event in 1998 after the formation of the International Snowboarding Federation in 1990. There is also a World Cup circuit consisting of 6 – 8 competitions a year as well as many other international competitions. Boarder compete in one of six events, namely, men’s halfpipe, ladies’ halfpipe, men’s parallel giant slalom and ladies’ parallel giant slalom, men’s snowboard cross and ladies’ snowboard cross.
