Softball Overview

In 1887 a group of Yale and Harvard Alumni wanted to play baseball indoors during the winter months and the idea of using a “soft ball” gained popularity quickly. By 1926 the game had spread across the US and was officially named Softball. Three game types were developed; women only, slow pitch and fast ball. Now two forms of the sport are played; slow-pitch is played by mixed teams and fast-pitch. The sport was formally introduced in the UK in 1984.

Women’s fast pitch softball was introduced at the 1996 Olympics. The American team has won every Gold Medal since.
