Squash Overview

Squash was invented at Harrow School, England in the 1830s. Pupils at the school realised that a punctured Rackets balls squashed on impact with the wall and produced a more varied game. In 1864 the school built the first purpose built courts and squash was officially founded. Today’s game is a hybrid of the “hard ball” game played in the USA and the “soft ball” game played in the UK.

The International Squash Rackets Federation was formed in 1967 but changed its name to the World Squash Federation in 1992. The WSF is recognised by the IOC as the International Federation for Squash and will appear on the programme for the Olympics in 2012. The rise in popularity and invention of glass-backed courts led to its inclusion in the World Games of 1997 where it has remained ever since.
