Table Tennis Overview

Introduced as an after dinner alternative to lawn-tennis in England in the 1890s, table tennis has come a long way. Initially cigar tin lids were used as rackets and carved champagne corks as the ball. Now the ball can travel at speeds of up to 160km/hr and the sport has one of the largest numbers of participants in the world.

The sport first appeared at the Olympics in 1988 (Seoul) with four events; singles and doubles for men and women. Paralympic Table Tennis takes two forms (Standing and sitting) and has been on the program since the first Games in Rome in 1960.
