Tennis Overview

Some historians date tennis back to ancient Egypt and the Arabic word “rahat” meaning palm has been attributed as the origin of the word racket. However the common view is that the modern game was developed in France in the 11th or 12th century. Due to the need for extensive facilities, tennis was a game played mainly by aristocratic society. However by the 1200s France could boast that over 1800 indoor courts had been built. By the 17th century the game has spread to England and there were courts in the USA and Australia by 1885.

Tennis has had a chequered Olympic heritage due to the conflict between the amateur and professional game. Whilst it appeared at the first Olympics in 1896 it was dropped from the programme after the 1924 Games only to return in 1988. Women and men now play both singles and doubles at the Games. Wheelchair Tennis became part of the Paralympic program for the first time in Barcelona in 1992.
