Touch Rugby Overview

Touch is one of the fastest growing sports in England, played by people of all ages and skill levels. Introduced from the Southern Hemisphere in the 70’s, touch is a fast, evasive, non-contact form of rugby.

Touch is one of the few team sports where men and women compete in teams together not only socially but also at an international level. There are currently approximately 12,000 people playing touch in organised leagues around the UK.

Touch is based on Rugby League Rules, six players are allowed on the field at any one time, with any amount of reserves off the field.

Teams retain possession for six touches at which point a turnover ball is awarded to the other team. Also if the ball hits the ground at any point a turnover ball is awarded.

When a touchdown is scored the teams receive one point and there are no conversions like in other formats of rugby. Matches are played across the width of half a rugby pitch and last for two 20-minute halves.

The world championships are held every 4 years Touch as are heavily dominated by teams from the southern hemisphere.
