Volleyball Overview

Volleyball was invented in 1895. Created in the same place and within a few years of basketball in Massachusetts, USA, the sport was originally known as “Mintonette”. Currently one of the “Big Five” sports, volleyball has seen a dramatic growth over the last 10 years. No one country has dominated the sport but Japan had the best female players in the 1980s and the USA has been particularly successful in the men’s game.

An Olympic sport since 1964 the beach version of the game was introduced at the Atlanta Games in 1996. Men and women now compete in both versions at the Olympics. Sitting Volleyball has been part of the Paralympic program since 1980.
