Wheelchair Basketball Overview

The game came to prominence when American basketball players were injured during the second World War. Word spread quickly and the first international meet was arranged between the USA and England in 1955. Traditionally the USA and Israel teams were considered to be the strongest but the French, British, Canadians and Dutch have all had recent successes. The sport was part of the first Paralympic Games in rome,1960.

Events are held for men's and women's teams. Players are allocated points (1-4.5) based on their functional ability. Five out of the twelve player squad are allowed on court at any one time but their total point tally must never exceed 14.
