Wrestling Overview

Whilst there are many forms of wrestling in the UK the predominant form practiced is the Lancashire or “catch-as-catch-can” style. The roots of this style have been traced back to mining communities. The Cumberland and Westmorland style is another popular form of wrestling practiced in the UK. Whilst the styles are slightly different most international competitions feature Freestyle (leg throws allowed) and/or Greco-Roman wrestling. The ultimate aim in both styles is to force an opponent's shoulder blades to the mat for the count of one.

Wrestling appeared on the programme at the first Olympics in 1896 in its Greco-Roman form (only use of the arms and upper body are permitted). A second "freestyle" event was introduced in 1904.
