Wushu Overview

The People’s Republic of China created Wushu often known as Modern Wushu or Contemporary Wushu, after 1949. It was an attempt to nationalise the practice of traditional Chinese martial arts.

In modern times Wushu has become a fully accepted international sport and the International Wushu Federation was formed in 1990 with the first world championships held in the following year.

The IWUF placed a bid to the IOC to have Wushu included in future Olympic Games, but so far without success. However, the IOC has allowed China to organize an international Wushu event during the 2008 summer Games in Beijing, but this event is not one of the 28 official Olympic sports, nor is it a demonstration event. Instead, it will be called the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Wushu Tournament.
